Aeration & Overseeding

What is Aeration?

Aeration is an important part of helping your lawn reach it’s full potential. Aeration aids in the infiltration of air, water and nutrients into the soil. What is core aeration? Aeration is the process of perforating and soil removing small plugs or cores of grass and soil that is then deposited on the surface of the ground.

Why Aerate Your Lawn?

This process enhances both the air movement in the soil and the nutrient base that’s already in your yard. It’s often used in yards that have highly compacted soil or for lawns that aren’t getting the air, food, and care that they need due to thatch.

We also offer DOUBLE Aeration for over 2x the results!  This entails a criss-cross or checkerboard pattern of aeration to help break down thatch, which is a dead grass that has created a layer or barrier. A thick layer of thatch prevents sunlight and water from reaching your grass. Aerating the lawn will break this down, which is ideal for growth.

Aeration is a beneficial process towards achieving a healthy lawn, but combining it with seeding will yield you even better results.

Overseeding

Seeding will fill in and create turf that looks and feels like a thick carpet. A number of conditions can cause thin bare areas in your lawn: insects or diseases, damage from summer drought conditions, or aging thatch buildup from a mature lawn. Seeding in combination with aeration has proven to be successful in thickening and filling in turf.

Our geographic area is best suited for a mix of grass seed that is designed to be resistant to drought, insects, and disease.

Scheduling

Dream Greener aerates in the spring or the fall and suggests an annual or bi-annual schedule to keep your lawn looking its best. In the Pittsburgh area during the spring, the best time for aeration and overseeding is between March and May, and in the fall, between August and November.

If you are debating whether or not to aerate we suggest that you try to push a screwdriver into the ground if you cannot push it down very far or you struggle to get half your shovel blade into the ground, contact us about our aeration service.

Core aeration is one of the best investments you can make to improve the health of your lawn. It reduces soil compaction, enhances the circulation of air, water, and nutrients deep into the soil, breaks down thatch, and helps thicken the lawn. Overseeding thickens and creates a lush grass carpet. Also, ask about topdressing and soil composting service.
