Professional Mulching
for Improved Soil Health in Mt. Lebanon, PA, and the Surrounding Pittsburgh Area
Mulch Installation Reduces Erosion, Reduces Weed Growth, and Improves Curb Appeal
Mulch plays a critical role in the health and appearance of your landscape. In Mt. Lebanon and throughout Pittsburgh’s South Hills, mulch helps regulate soil temperatures, prevent erosion on steep clay-based slopes, retain moisture during hot summers, and suppress weeds that compete with your plants for nutrients. Proper mulch installation is essential for plant health, soil performance, and long-term landscape success.
At Dream Greener Lawn & Landscape, we provide professional mulch installation services that support your lawn and plant beds year-round. Our trained team uses a commercial-grade bark and mulch blower to apply mulch evenly and efficiently, ensuring complete coverage without damaging existing plants. Whether you want to refresh your garden beds, improve drainage, or prepare your landscape for the growing season, we handle the entire process with care, precision, and a science-based approach.
Our Mulch Installation Services
Dream Greener offers full-service mulch installation for residential and commercial properties in Mt. Lebanon and the surrounding Pittsburgh area. Our professional process ensures your mulch is applied at the right depth, in the right places, and at the right time of year.
Bark Blower Application
We use a commercial-grade bark and mulch blower that propels mulch through an engineered airlock system. This specialized technique provides a clean, consistent, and even application. The blower technology allows us to efficiently handle spreading landscaping mulch in plant beds, topdressing gardens with compost, topdressing new lawn installations, applying mulch to erosion control blankets, and installing playground mulch. This method is faster, cleaner, and more precise than manual spreading, allowing our technicians to maintain consistent depth across beds while minimizing disturbance to existing plants and avoiding compaction from foot traffic in sensitive planting areas.
Mulch Selection Guidance
We help you choose the best mulch type based on your plants, soil health, and long-term goals. Our team analyzes your soil and landscape conditions to recommend the right material and application schedule. Hardwood mulch provides excellent moisture retention and breaks down slowly in shaded areas, making it ideal for foundation beds under mature trees. Shredded bark offers better erosion control on slopes due to its interlocking texture. Color-enhanced mulches maintain appearance longer but may contain additives that affect decomposition rates. For properties with rhododendrons, azaleas, or other acid-loving plants common in Mt. Lebanon's shade gardens, we consider pine bark or composted materials that support appropriate pH levels as they decompose.
Seasonal Mulch Programs
Most mulch installations are performed in spring, though properties with heavy tree canopies or active plant beds may benefit from a second application later in the year. Mulch refreshes improve soil health, appearance, and overall plant performance. Spring applications take advantage of soil moisture from snowmelt while suppressing early-season weeds before they establish. Properties with south or west-facing beds may need supplemental mulch in mid-summer to maintain adequate depth after decomposition and displacement from heavy rainfall. Fall mulching can provide winter protection for newly installed plantings, though we typically recommend waiting until after leaf drop to avoid trapping excessive moisture against plant crowns.
Integrated Landscape Care
Many homeowners combine mulching services with plant health care, lawn care, or seasonal landscape maintenance to improve curb appeal and soil conditions throughout the year. Mulching works synergistically with other landscape services to create healthier, more resilient outdoor spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Mulch Installation
Here are some commonly asked questions about mulch installation that we hear in the South Hills area. If you have more questions, get in touch!
Most South Hills landscapes benefit from a 2–3 inch mulch layer. Our clay-heavy soils already hold moisture, so applying mulch too deep can trap water around plant crowns. We adjust depth based on soil drainage and plant type.
Most Mt. Lebanon and South Hills properties need mulch once per year in spring. Shaded beds under mature trees often break down more slowly and may only need a light top-dress the following year. Check out our Ultimate Mulching Guide for Pittsburgh Homeowners for more information.
We use high-quality double-shredded hardwood mulch, which holds moisture, suppresses weeds, and decomposes cleanly into Pittsburgh’s clay soil. For acid-loving plants, we may recommend pine mulch.
Mulch helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, suppress weeds, improve soil structure, and protect roots during Pittsburgh’s freeze–thaw cycles. It’s one of the best investments you can make in your landscape.
Fungus can appear when mulch is too deep or stays overly wet. We install mulch at the correct depth and ensure beds allow for air circulation, especially in shaded Mt. Lebanon neighborhoods where moisture lingers longer.
Steep Mt. Lebanon and Upper St. Clair slopes shed water quickly during storms. We use coarser mulch, proper bed contouring, and edging to keep mulch in place on hillsides and prevent erosion.
Yes. Our hardwood mulch is safe for families and pets. We avoid dyed mulches that may contain fillers or poor-quality wood.
Absolutely. As hardwood mulch breaks down, it adds organic matter that improves soil structure, reduces compaction, and increases drainage — a major benefit for dense South Hills clay.
Spring (March–May) is ideal. Mulching in spring suppresses early weeds and prepares beds for summer heat. Fall mulching is also possible, especially after heavy leaf drop. Check out our Ultimate Mulching Guide for Pittsburgh Homeowners for more information.
No. Mulch should be pulled back 2–3 inches from trunks and stems to prevent rot and pest activity. We create a clean, proper mulch ring around every plant we install or maintain.
Mulch suppresses about 70–80% of weeds, but some perennial weeds can push through. Our full-service landscape maintenance includes routine hand-weeding and targeted treatments when needed.
Mulch itself doesn’t attract pests. Problems typically occur only when mulch is piled too deeply. We install mulch at proper depth to discourage insects and maintain healthy soil conditions.
A properly mulched bed absorbs more water and reduces erosion on sloped South Hills properties. Mulch slows down rainfall, protects soil from compaction, and keeps sediment from washing into storm drains.
Yes. Mulch insulates roots against Pittsburgh’s freeze-thaw cycles and helps evergreens, shrubs, and perennials overwinter successfully. It also reduces winter heaving in clay soil.
We evaluate each bed before installation. In most cases, we redistribute and refresh existing mulch, then top-dress with a clean layer. If beds are too deep or matted down, we remove or thin old mulch first.
