Landscaping and Lawn Care Services in Baldwin, Whitehall & Brentwood, PA

Lawn Care and Landscape Maintenance for Established South Hills Neighborhoods

Dream Greener provides professional, science-based lawn care, landscape maintenance and landscaping in Baldwin, Whitehall and Brentwood, PA, from the Brownsville Road corridor to the hillsides along Streets Run. Since 2013, our licensed team has helped South Hills homeowners with clay soils, steep yards and mature trees, and our work is backed by more than 200 five-star Google reviews.

What Makes Baldwin, Whitehall & Brentwood Landscapes Unique?

Most of each borough is mapped in the USDA soil survey as urban land, ground covered by streets, buildings and pavement, mixed with natural soil: about 64 percent of Baldwin, 75 percent of Whitehall and 86 percent of Brentwood. The most common natural soils are rocky, moderately shallow Culleoka and clay-rich Guernsey, and much of Baldwin and Brentwood is steep.

Paver patio with a stone fire pit and benches, edged by mulch beds, clipped hedges and a broad lawn

Lawns that stay soft and soggy every spring.
Guernsey and Dormont soils have a dense subsoil that takes in water slowly. Guernsey’s subsoil runs 35 to 48 percent clay, and Dormont holds a seasonal water table 20 to 35 inches down from January through April. Whitehall has the largest share of both. We core aerate and topdress with compost, and where water keeps pooling we regrade or add a French drain.

Steep yards that wash out or won’t hold grass.
A quarter of Baldwin and nearly a third of Brentwood sit on slopes of 25 percent or more. On the steepest ground, like Baldwin’s Streets Run and Glass Run valleys, Gilpin soil is 20 to 40 inches deep over rock and Weikert just 10 to 20. We hold these banks with deep-rooted groundcovers and terraced planting beds.

Hillside yards that seep, crack or creep.
USDA notes that hillside seeps and springs are common in Guernsey soil, and that slope creep and slippage are common. Its lower subsoil is rated high for shrink-swell, so it can crack as it dries out. We put in drainage that carries water off the slope, and fill beds with plants that tolerate seasonal wet.

Rocky beds that fight new plantings.
Culleoka, the most common natural soil in all three boroughs, is 20 to 40 inches deep over rock, and its lower layers are 25 to 80 percent flat rock fragments. In our landscape maintenance and planting work, we amend beds with compost and choose plants that root well in shallow ground.

Creekside yards in Baldwin that flood.
Along Lick Run, USDA maps Newark silt loam that floods often, for a few days at a time, from January through April, with water about a foot down in late winter and early spring. We keep beds out of the low spots and choose plants that handle wet ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the lawn care and landscaping questions our team hears most from homeowners in Baldwin, Whitehall and Brentwood, from Brownsville Road to Streets Run Road.

How much does lawn care cost in Baldwin, Whitehall and Brentwood?

Our Lawn Care & Maintenance Plan starts at $2,695 per season, and lawn mowing on its own starts at $1,980 per season. Your final price depends on the size of your property and the work it needs. We provide detailed written estimates after an on-site assessment that includes property measurement and a current condition evaluation. No surprises! You’ll know exactly what’s included and what it costs before we start. See our lawn and landscape pricing for starting prices on every service.

Why does my lawn stay soggy every spring?

Usually two things at once. Much of the natural soil here, Guernsey and Dormont, has a dense subsoil that takes in water slowly, and on graded lots the soil under the lawn is often compacted, so runoff from the slope above collects in low spots and sits. Core aeration and compost topdressing fix most of it. Where water still pools, we regrade or add a French drain.

Can you mow and maintain steep yards?

Yes. Our crews use equipment and mowing techniques suited to slopes and compact spaces. On banks too steep to mow safely, we replace turf with deep-rooted groundcovers or terraced beds that hold the soil.

When should I aerate my lawn?

Penn State Extension advises aerating in cool weather, late summer to early fall or early to mid-spring, and fall is the better time to overseed, since spring aeration can bring up weed seeds. It matters most on compacted clay and graded lots. Check out our blog post on compost topdressing and fall aeration for more information.

Are grubs a problem here?

Yes. Penn State Extension notes that Japanese beetle grubs feed on lawn roots from late summer into fall and again in spring. Preventive treatment is timed to protect roots before the new brood hatches. Signs include brown patches, turf that lifts like carpet and animals digging.

How do I handle fall leaves?

Each borough collects them differently. Baldwin picks up yard waste in paper lawn bags on Saturdays in November, Whitehall collects leaves in biodegradable bags on your trash day for about six weeks from late October, and Brentwood’s hauler collects yard waste on set weeks in spring, fall and early winter. Check your borough’s calendar for this year’s dates. Whitehall’s property maintenance code also lists dumping grass clippings, leaves or trimmings on your yard as a pest-attracting violation. Our fall cleanups clear matted leaves from the lawn before they smother the grass, and we leave what can stay in the beds. Check out our blog post on what fall cleanup should skip for more information.

How tall can my grass get before the borough steps in?

Baldwin’s borough ordinance limits grass and weeds to 6 inches, and Whitehall and Brentwood allow 8 inches. Our lawn mowing service keeps your lawn at a healthy height all season.

Do you offer deer control?

Yes. Deer are a real pressure here: Whitehall ran an archery deer management program from 2022 to 2025, and the borough’s figures ranked it first among the towns South Hills Animal Control serves for dead deer removed per square mile from 2017 to 2022. Our Deer Deterrent program, six visits a year, protects shrubs, perennials and young trees year-round.

Do you offer landscape design and installation?

Yes. We design and install landscapes throughout Baldwin, Whitehall and Brentwood. Our designs prioritize drainage, soil health, long-term plant success, and curb appeal. Check out our blog post on what a landscape designer does for more information.

Do you offer organic or hybrid lawn care programs?

Yes. Our organic program uses all-natural organic fertilizer, and you can add weed and insect control to it for a hybrid approach. You’ll find organic fertilization and its add-ons on our lawn and landscape pricing page.

Are your treatments safe for children and pets?

Yes. All applications follow label requirements and are safe once dry. We offer clear guidance for homeowners with specific concerns and provide organic program options for added peace of mind.
