3 Residential Landscaping Trends for 2021

As a homeowner in Pittsburgh, it is imperative that you stay up to date on the latest and greatest in the landscaping industry. While your landscape may look great right now, it will become noticeable if your property becomes static. You must consistently update your landscape if you want the best look on the block. When you make these updates, you want to be informed of current trends. We all know 2020 was a crazy year, and 2021 has only come with more change. Moving towards a new normal, 2021 has also brought about a variety of changes in the landscaping industry, altering what is prominent and popular. So, when you evaluate your landscape this year, we want you to be able to work with the newest residential landscaping trends for 2021.

Maximizing Garden Space

One of the most prevalent changes we have seen this year is a move away from empty lawn space, to the use of every inch of the property for productive planting. Along with that, we are seeing an increased number of people who are working from home full or part-time, with more free time to spend on their gardens. These gardens can include native plantings, formal gardens, and integrations with beautiful hardscapes. The moral of the story, less bare yard, and more garden spaces is the current trend. You cannot go overboard with planting this year.

Outdoor Living Spaces

With an increased focus on health and the spread of the novel coronavirus, many visitors now feel more comfortable enjoying their time at your home, outdoors. Allowing for more natural social distancing, and less sharing of surfaces, a nice patio to host on is a huge plus. Beyond health reasons, people are beginning to get more creative with their outdoor areas, and with summer in full swing, who would not love a new hardscape, from a patio to a fire pit. Think about extending your indoor living space, outdoors. Accent this space with green material, with trees and shrubs for privacy, and potted plants to give the space some personality. Enjoy your summer, hosting events right in your own backyard.

Low Maintenance and Sustainability

We wrote an entire blog about creating low-maintenance landscapes because it is all the rage. While many people have the luxury of more time to spend on their landscape, that time can also be used in a myriad of other ways. With that in mind, the implementation of environmentally friendly pieces of landscaping that do not require constant maintenance is a great look and lines up with new trends. Native plants are a good place to start, as well as a general reduction of space covered in turf, by using mulch, decorative rock, and boulderscaping. The less yard for you to take care of, the easier your life will be. Hardscapes are great for this as well, as they are a one-time installation, providing functionality, without the hassle of watering, fertilizing, and aerating.
